Role & Function :
District Library Sohra was established on 14th Sept 2002. It is a single room Library with small reading room. District Library Sohra being a public library, its purpose is to serve the general public in that community without distinction. Its documents/information is accessible to all members of the community irrespective of race, language, sex, status and educational, attainment.
Objectives:
Its main objectives is to serve the users by providing information to them through reading materials viz. books and periodicals. In this way a public Library can contribute to the welfare &progress of the community it served.
Collections :
The holdings of district Library Sohra consist of over 8500 Volumes of document including books on different subjects, viz General books, social sciences, science, health, religion, North-East books, maps, atlases, Fiction & non fiction. A library has also good collection on children’s book & khasi books.
Reference books: a library has many collection on reference books which comprises of general encyclopedia, subject encyclopedia, Northeast encyclopedia, Dictionaries on different subjects, Gazetteers, year book and a varieties of multi-volume books.
Periodical Collections – The Library acquires about 8 daily newspaper title(local&national newspaper) and 16 periodical titles every year.
Memberships – At present we have 405 members comprising of children, students, teachers workers, house wives and neo literates.
Library Fee: A Library fee of Rs.500/- is paid a member as a security deposit.

Services :
The Library provide the following services
- Lending service
- Reference Service.
- Assistance in the searching of documents.
- Assistance in the use of reference books.
Conclusion:
A public library plays an important role in the community by providing information equal to all on any subject. Any user can come to the library and make the most effective and efficient use of the resources and services of the library.
